Case Study — Mining Leadership Formation
Client: Major Tasmanian mining operator
Program: Six-Month Leadership Program (multi-cohort, bespoke, 2022-present)
Context
A major Tasmanian mining operator engaged a six-month leadership formation program across multiple cohorts of operational leaders.
The focus was strengthening leadership maturity under pressure, supporting safer, steadier decision-making in environments where operational performance, people leadership, and human dynamics intersect.
The Leadership Challenge
Operational leadership in mining requires more than technical competence.
Leaders were consistently required to:
- Hold responsibility for the whole operation, not just their area
- Stay regulated and effective under stress, conflict and pressure
- Navigate competing priorities without becoming reactive
- Lead across difference with clarity, fairness and respect
While technically capable, the organisation identified a need to deepen leadership maturity, emotional steadiness, and consistency under pressure.
The Work
This program combined horizontal development (skills and tools) with vertical development (capacity and maturity building).
Horizontal development (skills + tools)
- Practical frameworks for communication, feedback, and conflict
- Structured reflection tools to support clearer, safer conversations
- Insight tools (including Enneagram and Leadership Circle Profile)
Vertical development (capacity + maturity)
- 1:1 coaching as protected space for deeper self-awareness
- Guided work on recognising default patterns under stress
- Reflective practice embedded into live operational contexts
Evidence of impact (2025)
Participant feedback indicated a strong experience of relevance and quality:
- Majority rated overall program 9–10/10
- 100% rated the 1:1 coaching as Excellent
- All participants felt highly supported and understood
- All rated coaching as highly relevant to their goals
Reported Leadership Shifts
Participants described consistent changes in leadership behaviour including:
- Reduced reactivity and increased pause under pressure
- Greater behavioural choice in emotionally charged situation
- More direct and constructive conflict conversations
- Improved ability to repair and reset relationships
- Increased perspective-taking and openness to input
- Stronger self-reflection and accountability in real time
Wellbeing and Sustainability Impact
Leadership development and personal wellbeing improved together:
- Better emotional awareness and regulation under pressure
- Improved relationships at work and at home
- Greater ability to decompress and not carry work home
- Increased sustainability in leadership demands
Areas for Refinement
Feedback was largely about program fit and logistics rather than value:
- Mixed comfort with the level of personal sharing in the final group session
- Interest in additional sessions / adjustments to structure
- Minor practical considerations (location and better coffee!)
What the Organisation Gained
Across cohorts, the program strengthened leadership capacity in complex operational environments.
This included:
- More reflective, less reactive decision-making
- Healthier and more constructive conflict engagement
- Stronger self-awareness and emotional regulation
- Greater relational steadiness across teams
These shifts are consistent with increased leadership maturity in high-risk, high-pressure environments
"Importantly, the outcomes we have seen go beyond insight alone. Feedback indicates the program has supported real shifts in leadership behaviour, including increased ability to reflect, connect, and reduce defensiveness; improved emotional awareness and better self-management under pressure; and more constructive responses in challenging situations
It has also improved trust and communication with positive flow-on effects in relationships both at work and at home. This shows the program supports whole-person leadership development, not just technical leadership training.
Overall, I have found Ben to be professional, thoughtful, and effective in his work with leaders. I would confidently recommend him for leadership development in operational settings where practical leadership capability and strong culture are critical."
