Upskilling Leaders is a practical, developmental leadership program for supervisors, leading hands, foremen, senior trades, and emerging site leaders in building and construction.
This course is designed to strengthen the leadership capacity that improves retention, team culture, communication, accountability, and performance on site.
Many leaders are promoted because they are good at the work. But leading people well requires more than technical expertise. It requires the ability to stay clear under pressure, communicate expectations, hold standards with respect, manage conflict early, and build trust day to day.
That is what this course is designed to develop.
Who this is for
This program is suited to:
- Foremen and leading hands
- First-time supervisors and emerging site leaders
- Site supervisors and superintendents
- Senior trades with responsibility for apprentices or crew leadership
What the program covers
Over four full-day workshops, participants will build both the outer game of leadership and the inner game required to use those skills well when pressure rises.
This includes:
- communication and clear expectations
- accountability and follow-through
- emotional awareness and non-reactivity under pressure
- conflict repair and difficult conversations
- delegation and effective use of authority
- motivation, engagement, and team alignment
- healthier team rhythms, stronger meetings, and better handoffs
- building capability in others rather than relying on heroics
“It’s been the most rewarding and challenging training I’ve done… it has the potential to change the culture"
—
“A far better communication with both my current direct reports… feel more confident they understand what I want from them, and in turn they can ask me things without feeling I don’t understand them.”
—
“Keep it up — I wish I had done this course 10 years ago."
Optional add-on
Better Conversations Every Day
an optional peer-support lab designed to help participants embed the learning into everyday workflow and build a stronger peer coaching culture across the organisation.
This 8-hour add-on supports shared language, earlier repair, better psychosocial safety, and ongoing practical accountability after the workshops end.
Why this matters
Retention is shaped by the daily experience of work.
When frontline leaders communicate clearly, stay steady under pressure, hold standards with respect, and build trust in the team, organisations benefit from:
- stronger team culture
- reduced conflict and burnout
- clearer accountability
- healthier psychosocial safety
- higher retention of skilled people
This course helps leaders create the kind of workplace people want to stay in.
"the outcomes we have seen go beyond insight alone. Feedback indicates the program has supported real shifts in leadership behaviour, including:
-
Increased ability to reflect, connect, and reduce defensiveness
-
Improved emotional awareness and better self-management under pressure
-
More constructive responses in challenging situations
-
Improved trust and communication with others
-
Positive flow-on effects in relationships both at work and at home
This broader impact has been valuable, as it shows the program supports whole-person leadership development, not just technical leadership training".
